Jarrah is one of Australia’s most recognisable timbers, known for its deep red colour and remarkable durability. Sourced from Western Australia, it has long been valued for both structural and fine furniture applications, developing a richness and depth over time that few timbers can match. Its natural variation — from warm crimson through to darker burgundy tones — gives each piece a distinct presence, making it particularly suited to objects that are intended to last. In this Jarrah box, the timber takes centre stage. The lid is constructed using a traditional frame and panel technique, with a highly figured Jarrah burl set into the centre. This burl introduces a contrasting layer of complexity, with swirling grain and organic patterning that shifts in different light. It sits within the more restrained structure of the frame, creating a balance between order and natural expression — a recurring theme in contemporary interpretations of traditional craftsmanship. Inside, the box is lined with black felt, offering a soft and protective surface for jewellery, keepsakes, or small personal objects. The overall form is intentionally minimal, allowing the material and construction to define the piece.
